Knots and Spirals

The knot work design is extremely popular among Celtic jewelry. This is a series of designs representing a network of knots twisted and tied among one another, interwoven into a continuous loop, which symbolizes eternity. The interlacing of the different strands represents the crossings in our lives with others. Different shapes of knots generally are interpreted into different meanings. For example heart shaped knots represent love. The most common knots to be used as lover's knots are the Josephine Knot and the Granny Knot.

The current renaissance of modern Celtic art is due to a resurgence in interest in Celtic culture, where Celtic motifs and symbols have gained new meaning. Knot work designs are often used as a traditional reminder of heritage, but in modern times, more people are craving the deep, abiding solidity that ancient symbolism can bring.

There are few true sources on the meaning of Celtic scroll and Knot work; however, contemporary designers and artists are adding their own ideas and coming up with a blend that satisfies most traditionalists. These symbols have been used in every century since the Dark Ages, but were never so popular or widespread as they are today.

Spirals, one of the oldest symbols in Celtic Art, pertain to a person's achievement of balance between the inner consciousness and outer self. A typical pattern of the spiral is the Triskel.
