About Sapphire Jewelry

Sapphire is one of the toughest and most durable of gemstones. Due to its inherent hardness and brilliance, it is considered as the most versatile gem of all gem families. Sapphires can be used to enhance a variety of jewelry pieces. From necklaces, rings and earrings to anklets and armbands, name it and the sapphire can look good on any of these.
Sapphire is a member of the mineral species corundum. It comes in a wide array of colors from the traditional cornflower blue to the more exotic purple hues. Sapphires, however, do not come in red. Red gemstones from the species corundum are called rubies.
The birthstone for the month of September, the word “sapphire” was supposed to be derived from the Persian word “ safir” which roughly translates to “beloved of Saturn”.
