Traditionally, quality sapphires can be obtained from the Mogok Stone Tract in Burma and the gem fields of Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon ) and gems from these areas were very highly prized.
In 1880, several landslides revealed the beautiful treasures of the Kashmir Valley . Sapphires with captivating colors were discovered and Kashmir Sapphires became very much in demand in the market. About half-a-century ago, commercial production of Sapphires stopped and Kashmir Sapphires almost vanished into oblivion. To date very few Kashmir Sapphires are available in the market.
Due to the rarity of Kashmir Sapphires, Burmese and Ceylon Sapphires have once again taken center stage for their beauty and pedigree. However, sapphires of equal beauty can also be found in Australia , Cambodia , Kenya , Madagascar , Tanzania , Thailand , Vietnam and Madagascar 's Ilakaka gem fields.
