Maintenance and Storage
Due to the inherent hardness of the gemstone, it is very easy to clean sapphires and maintain their appearance. Although any cleaning material or technique may be used, ultrasonic cleaners, steamers, sudsy water and brushers are the norm.
When cleaning sapphire jewelry, do not handle the jewelry by the gem and always check the mounts. Touching the stone regularly may loosen it from the mount increasing the chances of it falling off. Since sapphires are more durable than the mounts itself, have the prongs checked regularly to ensure a tight fit.
Just like any piece of jewelry, do not wear gems when involved in strenuous physical activities. Accidentally hitting the gem on something hard or solid may damage the stone and reduce its beauty.
In addition, it is advised that all jewelry pieces be stored separately in airtight containers, and away from direct sunlight. Keep sapphire accessories away from other pieces as its hard surface may scratch or damage the surface of other softer jewelries.
