Types of Sapphires

There are two general categories by which all sapphires can be classified under. These are:

Sapphires – Only blue-colored sapphires fall into this category. Blue Sapphires are highly valued and are considered as the most expensive of all sapphires.

Fancy Sapphires – All other sapphires, particularly those stated with a color prefix are called “Fancy Sapphires”. These are further subdivided into the following:

Padparadsha Sapphires –What makes this sapphire unique and valuable is the fact that, three different colors: pink, purple and orange, are present in just one gem. Due to the presence of these colors, this sapphire resembles the beautiful Ceylonese lotus flower, Padparadsha, from which the sapphire was named after.
Pink Sapphires – Also highly valued, the Pink Sapphire is a big favorite among Fancy Sapphires. With colors ranging from shades of pastel pink to the more vibrant hot pink, Pink Sapphires, just like Blue Sapphires, provide an interesting accent to diamonds.
Yellow Sapphires – An under appreciated gem, the colors of Yellow Sapphires range from butter-yellow to bright canary. Yellow Sapphires are usually cut in large crystal sizes and are usually, quite reasonably priced.
Purple Sapphires – With rich purple colors that resemble exotic orchid flowers, Purple Sapphires are very much prized by collectors.
Green Sapphires – Green Sapphires are, just like the Yellow Sapphires, unfortunately under appreciated. Even with a wide range of green from olive green to the hue that closely resembles wine bottles, Green Sapphires are the least demanded of all.
Star Sapphires – Star Sapphires are one of the most popular of star gemstones. When looking at a Star Sapphire, bright and lustrous six to twelve-rayed star formations can be seen gliding across the gems surface. These sapphires are desired for their mysterious optical effects.
